Ethical issues in FP7 security research - a practical approach

A workshop on FP7 Security Research ethical issues will take place on 29 September at the headquarters of the Research Executive Agency (REA) in Brussels. The event aims to initiate a discussion between the different parties involved in "security research project life-cycle", clarify applicable procedures and favour the exchange of information and best practice. Evaluators, project coordinators and local, national and EU authorities are expected. Discussions will focus, in particular, on how to strike a balance and reach a reasonable trade-off between security research/technologies and compliance with the ethics/data protection legal framework at EU and national level. The workshop will also aim to identify the main difficulties in addressing the recommendations for negotiations, research projects' needs and legal implications concerning ethics/data protection and privacy, in particular the difficulties projects encounter when undertaking an authorisation or notification procedure at local/national level and the lack of harmonization of procedures at EU level.
