At the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in 2002 worldleaders set themselves goals of halving by 2015 the proportion of people without access to basic sanitary infrastructure and to develop integrated water resources management plans. The EU launched a Water Initiative to contribute to these objectives.
