In 1997, on the occasion of the 85th birthday of the long-serving mayor of the City of Innsbruck and President of the Tyrolean Parliament, Dr Alois Lugger, and to acknowledge the outstanding services he rendered to Europe, the Province of Tyrol and the City of Innsbruck inaugurated the Emperor Maximilian Prize.
