Education and training play a key role in transforming the European Union (EU) into a world-leading knowledge-based society and economy. Since the adoption of the Lisbon Strategy in 2000, political cooperation in education and training has been strengthened – first by the “Education and Training 2010” work programme, followed-up by the strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training “ET 2020”. This cooperation has led to the formulation of common targets and initiatives that encompass all types of education and training and all stages in lifelong learning. They are supported by a number of funding programmes, such as the Lifelong Learning Programme 2007-13 and Erasmus Mundus 2009-13. A large-scale public consultation process on the design of new programmes from 2014 onwards was launched by the Commission in 2010.

Furthermore, a number of networks and agencies support action in education and training, namely the Audiovisual, Education and Culture Executive Agency and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.

Examples of some significative instruments, action plans and initiatives in the area of education:

- Creation of 'European higher education area' by 2010. The next milestone of the European Higher Education Area will be marked with the upcoming Ministerial Conference, which will take place in April 2012,

- The European Commission’s initiative Netd@ys Europe which goal was to promote the use of the new media in education and culture,

- eTwining initiative is open to the Community for schools in Europe so that teachers from all participating countries can register and use the eTwinning online tools to find each other, meet virtually, exchange ideas etc.,

- The adoption of the Quality Charter for Mobility which constitutes the quality reference document for education and training stays abroad,

- Recommendation of the European Parliament and of the Council from 2008 on the establishment of the European Qualifications Framework for lifelong learning,
