The Commission announces that it will present an action plan , in 2011 in the framework of the Stockholm programme aiming at the creation of a European training standard for judicial occupations.

According to a new Eurobarometer report published today, nearly 80% of Europeans say they are interested in scientific discoveries and technological developments, compared to 65% interested in sport. Over 70% of Europeans think EU-funded research will become more important in the future. 57% think scientists should put more effort into communicating about their work and 66% believe governments should do more to interest young people in scientific issues. Europeans overwhelmingly recognise the benefits and importance of science but many also express fears over risks from new technologies and the power that knowledge gives to scientists.

More students than ever went abroad for studies and company placements with EU support through the Erasmus programme in 2008/09. According to new figures released today, almost 200 000 higher education students received grants to study or train abroad. This represents an overall increase of 8.7% on the previous academic year and means that more than two million young Europeans have benefited from Erasmus funding since the programme's launch in 1987. The biggest increase is in the number of students going on company placements – up more than 50% on the previous year. In addition, last year more than 36 000 staff from higher education institutions went abroad to teach or receive training in one of the 31 European countries participating in the Erasmus scheme.

The EU ministers of housing and urban development meeting in Toledo will study on Tuesday urban landscape regeneration in urban development policies and, this Monday, they will look at the rehabilitation and energy efficiency of buildings in terms of housing policies.

MEPs are dissatisfied over the limited progress on reforms related to EU integration made by Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), a potential candidate for EU membership. The nationalistic and secessionist rhetoric polarising society is detrimental to the country’s bid for EU integration, said MEPs in a resolution adopted on Thursday. Despite these failings, they nevertheless backed a proposal to allow BiH citizens visa-free travel to the EU.
