The European Commission and the governments of the USA and Canada will jointly invest €15 million on new transatlantic education partnerships involving 160 universities and training institutions and thousands of students on both sides of the Atlantic. The European Union will contribute €7.5m for the initiative, with €6m coming from the US and €1.5m from Canada. The funding will support student exchanges, joint degrees and better policy co-operation. The partnerships focus on a range of fields including energy efficiency, computing robotics, climate change, forestry management, languages and cinema studies. For the first time a transatlantic degree programme is established between the EU and Canada.

Expressing deep concern at recent measures taken by the French authorities and other EU Member States, Parliament argued on Thursday that mass expulsions of Roma people violate EU law as they amount to discrimination on the basis of race. MEPs called on policymakers to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and also criticised the Council and Commission's lack of commitment on the issue.

On September 6, 2010, the European Commission has proposed that 2012 would be the Year of active ageing. It's about helping to create better job opportunities and working conditions for the growing number of elderly people in Europe, to help them play an active role in society and promoting their good health. The European Parliament and the Council should approve this initiative in early 2011.

Almost 5 000 researchers requested, this year, a Marie Curie Fellowship funded by the European Union, 20% more than in 2009 and 70% more than in 2008. It is approximately 800 scholarships worth a total of 150 million euros will be awarded to researchers conducting a stay of up to three years abroad in the context of their work. A grant is intended for the first time specifically for researchers wishing to resume their careers after interruption.

Johannes Hahn was visiting Paris yesterday in the Region Ile de France to meet its president, Jean-Paul Huchon and Michelle Sabban, Vice-President of the Region and President of the Assembly of European Regions to address the changing Regional Policy and ERDF in Ile de France as part of the new program after 2013.

Tuesday, September 7, 2010, The European Commission has established a Task Force Rom to evaluate the use of EU funds by Member States on integration of Roma. The proposal was included in the analysis of the situation of Roma in France and Europe provided by the Vice-President Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Justice, László Andor, EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and the inclusion, and Cecilia Malmström, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs. The Task Force Commission on Roma will be composed of experts from the Commission services concerned, and analyze the measures taken by the Member States to the Commission Communication of 7 April (IP/10/407; MEMO/10 / 121), which advocated for the establishment of specific programs for Roma integration.
