A visa facilitation agreement was signed yesterday, 17 June by the European Union and Georgia, opening the way for easier travel and people-to-people contact across Europe. The signature of the readmission agreement negotiated between the European Union and Georgia in parallel will be organised very soon.

The creation of the joint venture New Eurostar, by the French rail operator SNCF and the British London Continental Railways (LCR) has been approved by the European Commission under certain conditions. New Eurostar will become a separate and independent joint venture, controlled by SNCF and LCR, operating the Eurostar service to France, the United Kingdom and Belgium.

The Citizens' Initiative has been submitted by the Council and the European Parliament to the Committee of the Regions for its opinion on the best way of implementing this Initiative, introduced under the Treaty of Lisbon. Although the Committee's support for the principle itself is definitive, in order to ensure that public participation in the European Union becomes a reality, it would like the measure to be made more accessible to ordinary people than the current European Commission proposal allows.

The EU Food Facility has met a great succes as it has managed to disburse over € 500 million. After only one year and a half from its adoptionand, 97% of funds are committed and the € 1 billion budget has provided a fast and efficient response in tackling food insecurity. Around 50 million people all over the world are receiving support from the facility and results are starting to show.

Europe 2020, the new strategy for jobs and growth should be adopted today by EU at their meeting in Brussels. The one-day meeting chaired by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will also discuss the forthcoming G 20 summit, economic governance and post-Copenhagen climate strategy.

The Swedish Socialist Anna Hedh, the Parliament's rapporteur believes Europe is engaged in a continuous struggle against it.

Innovative development funding mechanisms need to be backed by the EU, as the world's leading aid donor, if the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are to be met by the 2015 deadline, say MEPs in a resolution adopted on Tuesday. With only five years to go to the 2015 deadline for achieving the MDGs, MEPs expect the June 2010 European Council to agree on an ambitious and united EU position, ahead of the UN MDG meeting in New York on 20-22 September 2010, which must lead to new, results-oriented, additional, transparent and measurable commitments. Ten years ago, world leaders agreed to act to eradicate world poverty by 2015, setting targets in eight priority MDG fields, such as reducing poverty and hunger by 50%, full primary education and eliminating gender disparity and health-related issues.

As part of its mobility policy for Senior Staff, the Commission has taken a number of decisions, among which: the mobility of Senior Managers at Director General level who have reached five years or more in their present job, with the transfer of one Director-General having the same nationality as his current Commissioner, and the transfer and promotion of three Deputy Directors-General to Director General functions. This package is adopted at the same time as the creation of two new Directorates General, splitting the former Justice, Freedom and Security Directorate General. The two new Directorates General are DG Home Affairs and DG Justice, and their respective Directors General are appointed in the context of the package.
