The European Commission has decided to grant an additional €85 million to the Neighbourhood Investment Facility (NIF) for 2010. The aim of the decision is to allow neighbouring partner countries to leverage increased funding for major investment projects in key areas such as energy, transport and environment, as well as in the social sector (for projects such as construction of schools and hospitals). Private sector development will also be encouraged by the facility, targeting especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

The European External Action Service - could be voted in July by the European Parliament. It comes just days after European Union governments and the head of the new service, Catherine Ashton reached a deal in Madrid on the functioning, organisation and political accountability of the new service. The European Parliament has budgetary authority over the Service and is eager to ensure there is strong Parliamentary oversight to its operations.

The European Commission has proposed yesterday, July 5th to add Taiwan to the list of countries and territories for whose citizens a short-term visa is not required. Taiwanese passport holders would no longer require a visa when travelling to the EU Member States for 90 days or less.

The new interactive internet networks (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube)are generating European conversations and explaining the European Union. A recent report on the matter cites the success of the Parliament's 2009 online election campaign and Facebook page as examples that managed to mobilise more young people into European politics. The attraction is that these new forms of social media allow a great deal of interaction between electors and elected.

The European Union and the United States signed a protocol amending their 2007 Air Transport Agreement. The Agreement will open up aviation markets further and pave the way for more investment. This will bring increased benefits for consumers, communities and airlines on both sides of the Atlantic.

Since 1 July 2010 consumers no longer need to worry about accidentally running up huge bills when they connect to the internet using mobile networks via a phone or computer when abroad in the EU. Thanks to the EU's roaming rules, from 1st July travellers' data-roaming limit has been automatically set at €50 excluding VAT (unless they have chosen another limit - higher or lower).

The European Commission has approved 19 programmes in 14 Member States (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Spain and the United Kingdom) to provide information on and to promote agricultural products in the European Union. The total budget of the programmes running between one and three years is € 60.6 million, of which the EU will contribute € 30.3 million (50%). The selected programmes cover fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy products, honey, flowers, fibre flax, PDO, PGI and TSG and organic products.

Mobile phones, computers, TVs - we like them but where do they go when we are finished with them? In the worst case they can be dismantled by hand for scrap by children in developing countries. This can expose them to potentially fatal chemicals. New legislation aims to toughen existing rules on collection and treatment so that within six years 85% of all waste will be recovered and treated. Environment Committee MEPs backed the proposals on 22 June.
