The European Commission has published the call for proposals for the 7 Framework Programme of Research and Development (FP7). This programme gathers all the European actions on the fields of research and innovation, and it has an essential role in the economic growth, the competitiveness and employment in Europe.

The FP7, launched in 2007 with a budget of 50.5 billion Euros, has presently contributed almost for 19 000 projects. This transnational programme gathers all the member countries of the EU to cooperate in the fields of innovation and development. The FP7 is a part of the strategy for creation of the European Research Area.

This year the budget amounting 8.1 billion Euros supports projects reinforcing the competitiveness in Europe, targeting to create 210 000 new jobs at short term and fostering the economic growth for 75 billion Euros.

The programme is divided in four sub-programmes (in addition to which the specific programme for nuclear: research).

- Sub-programme “Cooperation”: supports transnational research projects (in the fields of health, alimentation, agriculture, biotechnologies, ICT, Nanoscience, nanotechnologies, new material and technologies in production, energies and environment including climate changes).

- Sub-programme “Ideas”: supports the exploratory research based on the scientific excellence. The programme aims at reinforcing excellence, dynamism and creativity in European research and improving the attractiveness of Europe for the best researchers from both European and third countries, as well as for industrial research investment, by providing a Europe-wide competitive funding structure, in addition to and not replacing national funding, for ‘frontier research’ executed by individual teams.

- Sub-programme “Persons”: the objective is to reinforce the human capital by supporting the researchers’ mobility that if financed under the Marie Curie actions. Some examples: Initial Training of researchers –Marie Curies Networks Lifelong learning and career development –Individual Scholarships Partnerships and linking of undertakings and universities International Component – international scholarships for “entering” and “outgoing” mobility International cooperation models – reintegration scholarships Awards for excellence

- Sub-programme “Capacities”: aims at developing research capacities on the following ares: Research infrastructures Research for the benefit of SMEs Regions of knowledge and support for regional research-driven clusters Research potential of Convergence Regions Science in society Support to the coherent development of research policies International cooperation
In addition to these four sub-programmes, the programme for nuclear research and training is implemented under Euratom and it has two sections: The first section focuses on nuclear energy research, nuclear fission and radiation protection. The second section covers activities of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in the nuclear field; activities of nuclear waste management, environmental impact and nuclear safety.

Who are the potential beneficiaries of the FP7?
This programme concerns several types of organizations: Research, organisations; Universities; Specialized High School Institutes, Public Research Institutes, Undertakings Individual researchers in all domains

Furthermore, if you have a research project and you wish to apply for European funding, you need to respond to a call for proposals published on the European Commission’s website.

In 2014, the present FP7 will be replaced by programme entitled “Horizon 2020” that will be the major financing instrument for research and innovation for the period 2014-2020.

An advice: Before putting together your application for European funding, ask yourself the following questions: Are you willing to work at the European level? Are you ready to collaborate with several institutions and organization abroad, to participate in meetings abroad, to produce your work documents in English? Has your project a European dimension?
