Several instruments will serve the participation to different thematic and specific programmes. With the FP6 new instruments have been created to fund the projects: Networks of excellence The purpose of Networks of Excellence is to strengthen and develop Community scientific and technological excellence by means of the integration, at European level, of research capacities currently existing or emerging at both national and regional level. Each Network will also aim at advancing knowledge in a particular area by assembling a critical mass of expertise. They will foster cooperation between capacities of excellence in universities, research centers, private companies, including SMEs, and science and technology organisations. The activities concerned will be generally targeted towards long-term, multidisciplinary objectives, rather than predefined results in terms of products, processes or services. Integrated projects Integrated Projects are designed to give increased impetus to the Community's competitiveness or to address major societal needs by mobilising a critical mass of research and technological development resources and skills. Each Integrated Project should be assigned clearly defined scientific and technological objectives and should be directed at obtaining specific results applicable in terms of, for instance, products, processes or services. Under these objectives they may include more long-term or "risky" research. Those projects have a maximum duration of 5 years. Projects of research and technological development (R&D) projects based on the acquisition of new knowledges in order to develop or improve products, procedures or services and/or to answer to the community political needs (financial participation of the Commission: 50% of the total eligible costs) Demonstration projects projects created to prove the viability of the new technologies offering a potential economic advantage, but that cannot be directly commercialised (financial participation of the Commission: 35% of the total eligible costs) Projects combining both R&D and demonstration they are projects that unite the elements cited above (financial participation of the Commission: 35 to 50 % of the total eligible costs) Specific targeted research projects (STREPS) STREPs supports research, technological development and demonstration activities of a more limited ambition than required by the Integrated projects. The objective of this type of project is to gain new knowledge, to develop new products or services and to prove viability of new technologies. It covers research and technological development and demonstration activities. At least 3 participants from 3 different countries have to take part in the projects which last 2 to 3 years. Funding support is up to several millions of Euros. Research projects in cooperation for the small and medium-sized companies (Craft) they are projects enabling to at least 3 small and medium-sized companies that are independent one from another and are implanted in at least two Member States or in a member State and in an associated one, to make executing jointly research works by a third company (financial participation of the Commission: 50% of the total eligible costs) Exploratory bonus for the small and medium-sized companies it is a support of 75% of the total eligible costs of a project’s exploratory phase of a period of time going up to 12 months (i.e.: feasibility study, validation, research of partners). The community financing can go to a maximum of 22 500 euros. Training grants The Marie Curie fellowships are directly asked to the Commission by individual searchers, or host fellowships, when the establishments ask for the possibility to welcome searchers (financial participation: a maximum of 100% of the eligible supplementary costs that are necessary for the action) Thematic networks the aim can be for example to group together manufacturers, users, universities, and research centres on a particular S1T objective. The theme networks include the co-ordination networks between projects financed by the Community. The support can go until 100% of the eligible costs that are necessary to the establishment and to maintain such networks. Concerted actions They are actions that co-ordinate RDT projects that have already received a financing; the aim is for example to enable the exchanges of experiences, to reach a critic mass, to diffuse the results, etc. (financial participation: until 100% of the eligible costs necessaries for the action). Accompanying measures They are actions that contribute to the implementation of a specific programme, or to the preparation to future activities of the programme. They will also aim at preparing or at sustaining other indirect RDT actions (financial participation: until 100% of the total eligible costs).
