CORDIS : The european interface on european R&D
Interview of M. Philippe Lebaube Head of Unit - CORDIS
What is CORDIS and why was it created? ?
The CORDIS designation is an acronym of « Community Research & Development Information Service ». Managed by the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, it is an information platform on research and development which is the official source of information on the seventh framework programme (FP7). The mission of this community service is to facilitate participation to European research activities, to inform on research results but also to give information on this sector to the general public.
This platform was implemented in 1990 during the 4th Framework Programme and is linked to the will of informing and facilitating acceptance and understanding by the society of research and its results.
What are the different services proposed by CORDIS? ?
As an official source on FP7, CORDIS proposes many services on its website http://cordis.europa.eu. The publication of FP7 calls for proposals and the partnership database which aims at facilitating connection between different potential actors of research projects are the most used services. The Project database allows consulting R&D projects financed under the former european research programmes and a part of the website is dedicated to the current events on research results and other linked events. At last, CORDIS offers a thematic access to fields such as energy, environment, agriculture, information and communication technologies, etc… in order to facilitate information research on these topics.
How does CORDIS promote FP7 programmes? ?
The first mission of CORDIS is to inform and promote research understanding by the citizen. This common platform was implemented thanks to the will of the main research community actors in order to promote R&D activities: the Directorates General for Research, Information Society, Transport and Energy and Enterprise. Thereby, scientific journalists, who have good knowledge on community programmes, cover research thematics as a whole and underline their results. In order to make information available for all, the team selects and put forward the relevant information
CORDIS aims at covering FP7 as a whole. What is its contribution to policies and programmes in the field of Research, Development and Innovation? ?
CORDIS has not a direct contribution to Research policies and programmes. The vocation and first mission of our organisation is editorial, don’t forget that we are managed by the Office of Publications of the European Communities. Our contribution is similar as a publishing house we deal with communication and dissemination of activities, results and opportunities of european research towards scientific community, the research world and EU citizens.
