The European Social Fund, created in 1957, is the European Union’s main financial instrument for investing in people. It supports employment and helps people enhance their education and skills. This improves their job prospects. Member States and regions devise their own ESF Operational Programmes in order to respond to the real needs ‘on the ground’.

1. European Projects change with the years? How would you define an ESF project today?

A project funded by the European Social fund has for primary objective to support integration in the workforce or keep people at work. The programme focus mainly “vulnerable groups of people” who have particular difficulty in finding work or getting on in their jobs, such as the long-term unemployed and women are a particular target group.

ESF projects must bring new solutions to problems encountered by job seekers or “excluded” people as individual workers, but also to a wide range of organisations acting to support these groups of people such as trades unions, public administrations or individual firms.

2. What are the advantages of running an ESF project for project managers?

ESF may add a new dimension to the projects and bring added-value in terms of volume of projects and solutions that can be presented to the final beneficiaries but also regarding the quality of activities and services proposed.

Project managers should consider a grants request to the European Social Fund to accelerate the development of innovating solutions and activities.

3. How Welcomeurope can assist the project leaders of ESF projects?

Welcomeurope may intervene and assist project leaders in the preparation of their grant requests and project definition by identifying the so-called « eligible” action lines and by providing writing instructions for project ideas in scope with the actions lines.
Then, we work hand in hand with the project leaders to complete the application and budget file.
We check if proposals meet the eligibility rules and we propose different contents of European added value. Welcomeurope also assist project managers after the grant awarding in order to increase project management skills.
