20th anniversary of the of Commission support to EU studies around the world

A Jean Monnet Conference celebrate 20 years of Commission support to EU studies. It opened today in Brussels in the presence of President José Manuel Barroso and Commissioner Ján Figel' and professors of EU studies from around the world. Since 1989, the EU has encouraged the study of European integration around the world through what is today the Jean Monnet Programme. The Programme supports professors specialised in European integration at universities in 62 countries on all five continents, reaching a quarter million students every year.

The annual Jean Monnet Conference is a forum of high-level dialogue on current European policy questions that brings together the Jean Monnet Professors with policy-makers and civil society representatives from around the globe. Previous Jean Monnet Conferences have served to conceive and announce important initiatives such as the European neighbourhood policy and the Commission's approach to intercultural dialogue.

The 2009 Jean Monnet Conference entitled "20 years of support to European Integration Studies: From the Jean Monnet Action to the Jean Monnet Programme", will be held in Brussels, in the Charlemagne building.
