39 million EU funding to support nutrition and social protection in Malawi

Social Affairs, Local development, Humanitarian, Health, Human Rights,-,

News The Covid 19 crisis threatens to reverse the progress made in human development in recent years. For this reason, €39 million has been allocated to Malawi. This funding will help meet the growing needs of vulnerable groups of the population, including pregnant women and children, in the areas of nutrition and social protection.

As the pandemic limits access to medical check-ups and treatment for malnutrition, EU support also includes measures to prevent Covid-19, including improving access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, as well as interventions to induce behavioural changes for the benefit of schoolchildren, their families and their communities as a whole. The World Food Programme, which has a long-standing partnership with the Government of Malawi on school feeding programmes, will implement the action.
An additional €23 million will be allocated to the national social cash transfer programme under the SoSuRe programme (increasing its total funding from €50 million to €73 million) to support vulnerable communities.
