An agreement on the budget: an additional 16 billion euros

-,

News After lengthy discussions between MEPs and representatives of the member states, an agreement was finally reached on Tuesday. This agreement is a positive sign but now it must be adopted.

Negotiations between MEPs, the Commission and the German Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers resulted in an agreement on the EU budget on Tuesday, November 10, 2020.
This agreement completes the overall financial package of €1,824.3 billion negotiated by EU leaders in July, including €1,074.3 billion for the multi-annual financial framework and €750 billion for the recovery plan known as the "Next Generation EU".
In all, the MEPs obtained more than 16 billion euros more for the multiannual budget, as announced by French MEP Valérie Hayer in a tweet where she filmed the negotiators applauding the result.
Discussions focused on the terms of this multi-year financial framework, with MEPs calling for additional funds to strengthen programs in health, education and research, which have been cut by governments in their plans.
In the end, the negotiations resulted in a targeted reinforcement of EU programmes by 16 billion euros for certain programmes, including 4 billion for Horizon Europe, 2.2 billion for Erasmus+, 3.4 billion for health, 1.5 billion for border management and 1 billion for InvestEU (to support employment and growth).
