About Civitas

CIVITAS (City VITAlity Sustainability) is a European Commission forum whose aim is an integrated approach to mobility and energy efficiency policies. The CIVITAS Forum brings together 36 European cities implementing innovative strategies and specific activities aimed at achieving profound change in mobility practices in cities by developing sustainable means of transport.

The involvement of Nantes and its benefits

For 30 years, the city of Nantes has been committed to an ambitious policy to promote public transport and create a balance between the various means of travel. In the city, the following investments have been co-financed by the European Union through CIVITAS:

- Natural gas-fuelled buses
- Trentemoult’s gas compressor station
- Developments along the BusWay
- Remodelling of the Route de Vannes road
- Extension of the tramway’s Line 3
- Development around the new stations on the Nantes-Vertou line
- Support for the purchase of bikes through the Velocampus scheme

Nantes was one of the first European cities to join the CIVITAS programme. Its commitment is continued through its involvement in a new programme resulting from CIVITAS. The aim of this programme, called CATALIST, is to transfer the experience and knowledge of recognised cities such as Nantes.
