Croatia gets green light for EU accession talks.

The European Council of 18 June gave Croatia the go-ahead to open membership negotiations with the EU in early 2005.
Heads of state and government have not yet agreed upon an actual accession date, but have decided to convene a bilateral intergovernmental conference with Croatia early in 2005 to begin negotiations.

The Council has asked the Commission to prepare a pre-accession strategy for Croatia, including the necessary financial instruments.

Efforts are still needed in the fields of minority rights, the fight against corruption, judiciary reform and regional cooperation. The Council also mentioned that Croatia should enhance its cooperation with the International Tribunal in The Hague.

Depending on the pace at which Croatia meets all the requirements for membership, the country could reach accession in 2007 together with (or shortly after) Bulgaria and Romania.
