Culture and the Structural Funds: a succes story?

17 September 2009. The European Commission has recently launched a study of the evidence in successful cooperation between culture and ecominomic development. It appears that cultural develoment is making contributions to local and regional development. Can culture make a significant contribution to modern economies and social change?

Does culture have an important part to play in local and regional development?

Are you interested in the cultural economy or culture's role in social developments or have you participated in culture-based projects supported by the EU’s Structural Funds? If so, we’d like to hear from you.

Together with the ERICarts Institute, we are conducting a study for the European Commission on the Contribution of Culture to Local and Regional Development as part of European Cohesion Policy and our aim is to involve as many people with practical experience in the field as possible.

Those involved in culture-based projects, officials responsible for developing or applying cultural or Structural Fund policies or people with a particular interest in how cultural activities impact on the economy and society may wish to participate in the study in the following ways:

1) Express an interest in attending a Seminar in Brussels on 11th November 2009. The Seminar will examine evidence from projects funded over both the 2000–06 and the current programming periods. It will analyse the nature and extent of impacts, identify trends and highlight good practice and innovative approaches.

2) Provide us with information on projects you think should be highlighted, either because of their success, their innovative approach or their application to particular circumstances.
