Enlargement to Cratia: meeting today in Prague

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will host the fifth meeting of the EU-Croatia Joint Consultative Committee on 5 May 2009 in Prague; the agenda will include flexicurity and ways of communicating the enlargement process. The event will bring together approximately 50 participants to discuss flexicurity, on the basis of reports drafted by both sides. The agenda will also include communications policy and, in particular, the JCC will debate effective ways of communicating the process of Croatian accession to the Croatian public. Participants will include representatives from Croatian and Czech civil society organisations, international socio-professional organisations, the EESC, the European Commission's DG Enlargement, and other EU institutions.

The Joint Consultative Committee will adopt its final conclusions on these topics and on Croatia's preparedness for accession to the EU. As in previous meetings, the conclusions will focus on recommendations to public authorities in the EU and Croatia. A press conference on flexicurity will be held at 1.15 p.m on 5 May.

Waltraud Klasnic (Employers' Group, Austria) and Lidija Paviavić-Rogošić, Director of ODRAZ, Sustaining Community Development, will chair the meeting as Co-Presidents of the EU-Croatia JCC.

Background information
The EU-Croatia JCC comprises twelve members, six from the EESC and six from civil society organisations in Croatia. It complements the Stabilisation and Association Agreement between the EU and Croatia and it allows civil society organisations from both sides to monitor the accession negotiations and to prepare Croatian accession to the EU.
