ETF and partners consider ‘across campus’ entrepreneurship education

With entrepreneurship education taking precedence in the EU policy agenda, the ETF and its partners from the pre-accession and Southern Mediterranean regions gather in Bitola in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on Friday 20 November 2009 to determine how more entrepreneurial value can be generated through third-level education.Policy makers, and representatives from the higher education establishment and private sector of some sixteen countries will consider the outcomes of the first phase of an ETF pilot project which aims to determine the feasibility of policy indicators to promote entrepreneurship in higher education.

The project is prompted by policy recommendations by the European Commission for promotion of entrepreneurship education beyond the business school, encompassing all faculties. The indicators were put to the test by eight pilot universities in 2009 which involved an intensive peer review process with experts criss-crossing the ETF partner regions in pursuit of good policy know-how and better practice in third-level entrepreneurship education.

The project has generated significant interest around the pilot universities with dialogue and reflection on university strategy, curriculum, staff development, enterprise cooperation and higher education policy. In 2010, a further ten universities will continue to pilot the indicators drawing on lessons learnt from the first phase.

The outcomes of the first phase of the project are timely given renewed concern and interest as to how education can better support local, regional and national economies in the fight-back against the global economic downturn.

The ETF’s promotion of entrepreneurship education in its partner regions has the full backing of the agency’s Governing Board which includes the 27 EU countries. Furthermore, ETF activities have been given an extra boost with particular attention given to entrepreneurship within the political guidelines of the in-coming European Commission.
