The EU Health Journalism Prize winners are...

745 eligible articles were submitted by 438 journalists from all EU countries under the second edition of the EU Health Prize for Journalists. National juries selected the finalists. The EU jury came together on 28 October 2010 to choose the overall winner and the two runners-up. The winners were proclaimed at the award ceremony in Brussels on 30 November. Last night, the three winners of the 2nd EU health prize for journalists were announced in Brussels. Two Italian journalists, Gianluca Ferraris and Ilaria Molinari, writing for 'Panorama', won first prize for their joint article "Stealing Hope". The winning article draws attention to "healing clinics" that offer expensive, but unproven, therapies to vulnerable patients suffering from chronic diseases. A Czech journalist, Lucie Hášová Truhelková, author of an article on organ donation entitled "Love Dwells in the Kidney", was awarded second place. A team of Danish journalists, Kasper Krogh, Morten Crone, Line Holm Nielsen and Jesper Woldenhof, writing in 'Berlingske Tidende', came third, for their article "The Great Failure" about an individual's quest to change the health system. The prize rewards the work of journalists across Europe who have raised awareness on healthcare and patients' rights issues.

John Dalli, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy said: "With this prize, the Commission stresses the important role of the media in raising awareness on health issues. This year's winners, and all national finalists, have all raised key issues for their readers".

This year saw a major increase in both the number of eligible articles and the number of journalists who participated. 438 journalists from all 27 Member States took part in this competition, 44% more than last year. They submitted a total of 745 articles, a 60% rise since last year. The 27 shortlisted articles deal with a broad range of subjects which are part of the 'Europe for Patients' campaign. These include areas such as organ donation, patient safety, the H1N1 flu pandemic and cross-border healthcare, to name a few.

Background

During the summer, national juries selected a finalist from each Member State. The EU jury evaluated the 27 shortlisted articles and convened at the end of October, to decide on the 3 winning articles. The 9 member EU jury was composed of European Commission officials, public heath experts and journalists. It was chaired by Andrzej Rys, Director of Public Health and Risk Assessment at the Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Consumers.

The 27 national finalists, and the editors of the publications, were invited to Brussels for a media seminar on the 'Europe for Patients' initiatives and to attend the award ceremony at the Berlaymont.

The EU Health Prize for Journalists and the Europe for Patients Campaign are funded by the EU Health Programme.
