EU Welcomes the World to International Recruitment Seminar

Today a group of influential national and international governing bodies will meet in Brussels to discuss the future of public sector recruitment. Hosted by Maroš Šefčovič, Commission Vice-President for Inter-institutional Relations and Administration, the seminar will focus on identifying and sharing best practice to help guarantee quality of staff, and effective cost-per-hire, in the public sector.The seminar will be a first attempt at bringing together a number of leading representatives from across the public sector at national and international level on a global basis. It takes place against a backdrop of economic uncertainty with all the challenges that this brings, coupled with growing competition from other sectors of the job market.

Vice-President Šefčovič, speaking before the event, told journalists: "Staffing and recruitment are increasingly important issues for public sector organisations across the world; they need to ensure more than ever that they are providing value for money during these times of austerity. We believe that we have gone a long way in a short time to improve the staff selection procedures of the EU, and I am looking forward to sharing our knowledge and experience with our partners from across the globe."

The international group of representatives taking part in the seminar will include the United Nations, the African Union, the Public Service Commission of Canada, the International Organisation for Migration and the Council of Europe- as well as several EU Member States. In addition expert opinion on public sector staff selection and graduate recruitment will be provided by CEOs from both the global Association of Test Publishers and the UK's Association of Graduate Recruiters.

The event has been set up following significant modernisation of EU staff selection methods which has seen a shift from knowledge to skills-based testing and the introduction of an annual cycle to make application periods more predictable for today's graduate workforce.

David Bearfield, the Director of EPSO who led the EU's modernisation of selection procedures, welcomed the event: "We are very happy that over the past six months we have been able to share the experience of our modernisation process with several international partners. Today's event is a fantastic opportunity for us to continue to work together to improve international public sector recruitment - something which is in everyone's interests."

European students and graduates currently just have a few days left to apply for the EU's 2011 'AD' recruitment drive, which closes at midday CET (Brussels time) on 14 April 2011.
