Europe for Citizens Forum 2007 hosts the Golden Stars Awards 2007 for active European citizenship

The Golden Stars Awards are given to shining examples of projects around Europe that encourage active civic participation in EU issues. The winning projects come from Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, and the UK. The European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Mr Ján Figel, will be handing the awards to ten projects at a ceremony held in Brussels on 8 November 2007 during the Europe for Citizens Forum 2007.
This year’s Forum focuses on intercultural dialogue, and helps to usher in the upcoming European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008. Many of the prize-winning projects feature a strong intercultural profile and demonstrate how intercultural dialogue constitutes a fundamental part of active European citizenship.

The Europe for Citizens Forum 2007 is organised within the framework of the European Commission’s new "Europe for Citizens" programme, which runs from 2007 to 2013. This funding programme offers multiple forms of support for civil society organisations and town twinning initiatives. Launched this year, it has a budget of up to € 215 m over its seven years’ duration to help fund town twinning, remembrance and civil society activities, while at the same time providing structural support to a number of European civil society organisations and think tanks.

In this way, the Europe for Citizens programme supports almost 100 000 people each year to participate in activities organised in towns or rural areas other than their own.

More specifically, support for town twinning initiatives, which account for 46.4 % of the total budget for 2007, covered almost 2 800 twinned towns around Europe this year alone. Over the life of the programme as a whole, the programme is expected to help finance more than 10 000 projects in the EU.
