The European Parliament will award its 4th 2011 Journalism prize on October 19

Next Wednesday, the journalists who participated the most to the understanding of European affairs will be awarded the European Parliament Prize for Journalism.The award goes to journalists who have made an outstanding contribution to clarifying major issues at European level or have promoted a better understanding of EU institutions or policies. The prize is awarded in four categories: written press, Internet, TV and radio, with each winner receiving €5000.

This year's prize attracted a record 355 entries from across the EU, including 158 print entries, 73 web entries, 64 TV entries and 60 radio entries.

Award ceremony and discussion

Juries of journalists from each member state selected 64 national laureates, from which the four winners were chosen by a jury chaired by EP Vice-President for Communication Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou. The panel included MEPs and members of the international press and press associations.

EP President Jerzy Buzek will award the prizes during a ceremony in Brussels at 0900 CET Wednesday. Following the ceremony, the award-winners, national laureates and 60 young journalists from the European Youth Press will attend a seminar entitled "Nothing is impossible: Reporting on Human Rights and International Conflicts."
