European Union supports Prizren's religious heritage in Kosovo

On 15 September, the head of the European Commission Liaison Office, Renzo Daviddi, handed over the keys to two Serbian Orthodox buildings in Prizren to the Serbian Orthodox ChurchAs part of its overall support to the reconstruction of religious heritage in Kosovo, the European Commission financed the restoration and refurbishment of two key Serbian Orthodox buildings in the vicinity of the Orthodox St Georges Church of Prizren – the Episcopal Residence and the Serbian Orthodox Seminary. Both buildings were badly damaged in March 2004 and required substantial reconstruction.

The project supports the Serbian Orthodox Church as an important religious institution in Kosovo and for the Kosovo Serb community in Kosovo and in Prizren. Some € 1.5m was provided for the repair and refurbishment of the two buildings. The reconstruction of buildings started in March 2007.

The European Union promotes and supports the respect for fundamental rights and freedoms including, religious freedom. The completion of the works should encourage more returns and the establishment of the normal religious life in Prizren. The European Commission remains fully committed to support the work of the Reconstruction Implementation Committee and to support religious and cultural heritage in Kosovo.
