News Innovation Circus, a consortium of 16 partners from eight member states that aims to change people's mindsets and promote an innovation culture in Europe, was launched in Copenhagen today.

Over the next year, it will organise events to encourage business people, scientists, politicians, students and young children to explore their creativity and innovative powers. The new PRO-INNO Europe initiative is a response to a challenge identified in the Commission's recent communication Putting knowledge into practice: a broad-based innovation strategy for the EU. This stressed that Europe needs to become "a truly knowledge-based and innovation-friendly society where innovation is not feared by the public but welcomed, is not hindered but encouraged, and where it is part of the core societal values and understood to work for the benefit of citizens". The launch, in the presence of Uffe Toudal Pedersen, Permanent Secretary of the Danish Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, and David White, Director for Innovation Policy in DG Enterprise and Industry will be followed by various regional innovations days and workshops in Copenhagen, Riga, Berlin and Milan during 2007. The following year a European conference will examine the results of the project, identify the factors driving innovation and make recommendations to further stimulate a European innovation culture.
