Jordan: EU funds for tourism economy
European Union, through the Euromed (ENPI) programme, finances development of the tourism sector in the Aqaba region, Jordan.The EU’s institutional support to the Aqaba region in southern Jordan to became a tourism destination in its own right has had an impact: a fully staffed tourism division and tourism information centre were established; a tourism marketing strategy was developed for 2005-2010; publications in eight languages were produced; the target of 60% occupancy in hotels was achieved and 4,500 persons trained or were part of the awareness campaigns.
“Aqaba is now ready to realise its vision to become an international tourism destination," said the Programme Coordinator, Samer M. Tarawneh, according to a EuropeAid fiche.
The EC contributed €10 million to this programme, for the period 2002-2008.
