Launching of European Research Council (ERC)

The European Research Council (ERC) will officially be launched at the kick-off event in Berlin. The creation of the ERC marks a new beginning for frontier research in Europe. For the first time, Europe will have its own funding agency for this type of cutting-edge science. The ERC will have over € 7,5 billion from the Seventh Framework Programme for Research (FP7) to give to the best researchers in Europe between 2007 and 2013. This funding will enable, stimulate and unleash a creative and pioneering spirit that will help Europe regain its leadership in science and knowledge.
The ERC will also equip Europe with the frontier research capabilities needed to meet the challenge of worldwide competition. As such, the ERC is a key component in the updated Lisbon strategy for growth and jobs that aims to turn Europe into a globally competitive, knowledge-based society.
