Meeting of European Sports Ministers on the fight against corruption in sport

On Tuesday, September 6, a consultation will take place in Gdańsk between the Sports Ministers of the Member States of the European Union and representatives from the world of sport, on the fight against corruption.Taking part in the meeting are the sport ministers of Poland — Adam Giersz, Great Britain — Hugh Robertson, Hungary — Attila Czene, Spain — Albert Soler and Portugal — Alexandre Miguel Mestre, as well as official delegations from Cyprus, France and Denmark and representatives of the sport federations UEFA, FIBA EUROPE and EHF.

One of the Polish Presidency’s priorities in the sporting realm is the war on threats to sporting rivalry. The most serious of them is match fixing.

The issue of result manipulation is currently a vitally discussed sporting topic in the international forum. The Council of Europe has already taken measures in that area. In the near future, that organisation’s Committee of Ministers will adopt recommendations on the promotion of honest rivalry. The problem has been noticed by the International Olympic Committee, sport federations as well as operators of betting establishments.

The Gdańsk consultations of EU Member States with the sports movement is to help develop the text of the EU Council’s conclusions on how to combat match fixing. The document will be finally elaborated during meetings of the working group on sports and most likely adopted at the EU Council on Education, Youth, Culture and Sport in November 2011.
