New Impetus to EU – Turkey Civil Society Dialogue

The Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey are launching on 9 September 2008 a new generation of projects aiming to enhance the dialogue between civil society in Turkey and in the EU119 projects are being launched today at the opening event of the 19.3 million euro-worth grant programme “Promotion of the Civil Society Dialogue between the EU and Turkey”, hosted by H.E. Mr Ali Babacan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief Negotiator with the EU.

For the implementation of these projects, more than 300 organisations and institutions from Turkey and the EU will work together. The successful projects, co-funded by the European Commission up to 90% of their value, are implemented by 41 towns and municipalities, 25 professional organisations, 28 universities and 25 youth nongovernmental organisations, covering a broad range of activities:

- The towns and municipalities initiatives foster effective, transparent and participatory local governance, high quality municipal services , environment protection, adult education as well as tourism and culture.
- The professional organisations seek to encourage exchange of knowledge and best practices on planning and implementation of EU policies ranging from social protection and health, to sustainable rural development and corporate social responsibility.
- The universities initiatives include thematic areas such as scientific collaboration, networking, multiculturalism, EU institutions and policies, as well as Turkey’s EU accession.
- The youth initiatives support networking events, summer schools and camps, youth festivals, seminars, conferences, and awareness-raising campaigns.

The EU Civil Society Dialogue Programme was launched in 2005. Since then, more than 70 projects worth an overall 4 million Euro have been implemented in Turkey.
