New Smart Specialisation Platforms launched today

Industry, Innovation, New technologies, SME Policy,-,

News The European Commission announced the launch of two Smart Specialisation Platforms for the sectors of industrial modernisation and agri-foods.

Today, the European Commission has announced during the Smart Regions Conference that it will launch two Smart Specialisation Platforms for the industrial modernisation and agri-food sectors.

This initiative will offer direct support to regions that wish to foster interregional cooperation by matching their Smart Specialisation Strategies on industrial modernisation, such as Key Enabling Technologies, service innovation or resource efficiency. These platforms will be hosted by the Smart Specialisation Platform based in Seville. Thus, the platform on industrial modernisation could help regions develop common infrastructures or share the existing infrastructures such as testing facilities, pilot plants, data centres and Fab Labs.

Specific support will be given to the regions to combine the various EU investment instruments, such as European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), the COSME programme for European SMEs, the Horizon 2020 programme for research and innovation and the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI).

Smart Specialisation represents an innovative approach aimed at a more efficient allocation of public investments that will allow countries and regions to capitalise on the sectors they chose to prioritise in order to create new competitive advantages. Throughout the EU, 135 regions have chosen to prioritise industrial modernisation in their Smart Specialisation Strategy thus highlighting the need for a dedicated platform for the sector.

For information, the first thematic Smart Specialisation Platform has been launched in 2015 in order to foster interregional cooperation in the sector of energy. Today, the platforms for the industrial modernisation and agri-foods sectors are launched but more will follow shortly with expertise, advice and networking opportunities through workshops and seminars.
