The cement industry is responsible for 6 to 8% of global CO2 emissions. This pollution is mainly the result of the raw materials needed to manufacture cement. LEILAC, an innovative Horizon 2020 project, allows factories to capture 5% of the CO2 produced before it is released into the atmosphere.
According to researchers from the LEILAC project launched under Horizon 2020, this technology requires only minimal changes to the plant's conventional production line. It makes it possible to capture CO2 without using additional chemicals. Its development required a series of challenges to be met.
The team is now working to develop the technology on a large scale to capture 95% of the total CO2 emissions produced by the cement plant while seeking to develop other circular economy models.
