On 9 May 1950, Robert Schuman, French Minister for Foreign Affairs, presented his proposal for the organization of Europe. This proposal called the “Schuman Declaration” is considered as the launch day of the European construction. The declaration is at the origin of the first European Community: the European Coal and Steel Community (founded in 1951).
Afterwards, creation of other communities followed. For example, the creation of the European Economic Community (1957). These communities strengthened relations between European countries and created the European Union (EU) as we know it today.
Europe Day is celebrated every year on 9 May in all EU Member States to honour this special day. 9 May was declared as “Europe Day” in a summit held in Milan in 1985.
Nowadays, 9 May is the moment to remember that Europeans live in a Union based on the principles of the rule of law, have a democratic system based on popular sovereignty and common values. The 9 May also reminds us all the accomplished work to achieve the common values and shows that we still have a lot of work ahead.
May 9, the Day of Peace and Unity, has become a European symbol which, together with the flag, the anthem, the motto and the single currency, identifies the European Union as a political entity.
On the occasion of Europe Day, every year cities and associations organize various activities and festivities. This year the institutions of the European Union open their doors to the public on 6 May in Brussels, on 13 and 14 May in Luxembourg and on 14 May in Strasbourg. It will be an opportunity to learn more about institutions and the EU ahead of Europe Day.
