Priorities and funded actions:

Objectives
* Empower civil society organisations on the ground and support their efforts to advance and defend democracy and human rights as well as consolidate their role as actors for positive change

Priorities
* Lot 1: Support freedom of expression with particular emphasis on the media environment;
* Lot 2: Support to civil society actions aimed at promoting and protecting human rights defenders in the country;
* Lot 3: Protection and promotion of political, social, economic and cultural rights for people living with albinism

Among financed actions
* Lot 1:
– Support to freedom of expression with particular emphasis on the media environment;
– Awareness raising among journalists regarding their role and improving media professionalism and assisting and encouraging independent media organisations to develop their professional skills;
– Increase competency of media, their understanding and capacity to accurately report on human rights, political, social and economic issues, including through training and strengthening of media training institutions;
– Promote freedom of expression, through media training and ethics;
– Understanding and use of social media and their importance as support to democratic debate;
– Establish and support the viable community media which reach remote local communities and enable marginalised sections of the civil society to gain a voice

* Lot 2: 
– Strengthen capacities of local human rights defenders and HRD organisations (e.g. training on advocacy, litigation, strategies of change, research, monitoring and reporting about violations of human rights and impunity)
– Monitor and investigate human rights violations, including fact-finding missions and dissemination of findings;
– Provide medical and psychological assistance, legal counselling and any other type of support;
– Awareness-raising on human rights and international law standards, increasing accountability, and combatting cultures of impunity;
– Advocacy, lobbying and development of strategies to create a better environment for HRDs and HRD organisations;
– Participate in public dialogue/Collaboration with National Human Rights Institutions;
– Financial Support to Third Parties (re-granting)

* Lot 3: 
– Provide medical, psychological and security assistance, legal counselling and any other type of support;
– Increase the quality of data on albinism and conduct research to establish the root cause of the attacks;
– Undertake multimedia albinism awareness campaigns;
– Capacity building of the families of children with albinism on albinism and human rights

Additional information
* This is a restricted call for proposals. In the first instance, only concept notes will be evaluated

* Initial duration of the project: between 12 and 24 months

* Eligibility
– Be a legal person;
– Be non-profit-making;
– Be a Civil Society Organisation or an Association of CSOs;
– Be established in an EU Member State, in Malawi or in any eligible country or territory as stipulated in the CIR;

– If the lead applicant does not have its headquarter in Malawi, then it should mandatorily act with at least one Malawian co-applicant;

– Actions must take place in in the Republic of Malawi
