The objective of the BBI Initiative is to implement a programme of research and innovation activities in Europe that will assess the availability of renewable biological resources that can be used for the production of bio-based materials, and on that basis support the establishment of sustainable bio-based value chains.

Priorities and funded actions:

Each topic has its own specific objective.

Topic 1: From lignocellulosic feedstock to advanced bio-based chemicals, materials or ethanol (BBI.VC1.F1)
Priority: Establishing at industrial scale a first-of-a-kind, cost-effective biorefinery concept leading to the conversion of lignocellulosic feedstock into bio-based chemicals, materials and ethanol

Topic 2: Valorisation of cellulose into new added value products (BBI.VC2.F2)
Priority: Demonstrating at industrial scale first-of-a-kind cost-effective biorefinery concepts leading to the production of economically competitive cellulose-based products for bulk materials and volume applications

Topic 3: Innovative processes for sugar recovery and conversion from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) (BBI.VC4.F3)
Priority: Innovation efforts with a view to demonstrating at industrial scale a first-of-a-kind, cost effective new value chain for the recovery and conversion of MSW-based sugars into bio-based products
