Funds for: Developing conservation agriculture practices in the Mediterranean area
Main beneficiaries: Any legal entity

Priorities and funded actions:

Objectives
* Increase crop water availability and control soil erosion through the development of conservation agriculture practices;
* Reduce labour and energy costs;
* Understanding local agrosystems and socioeconomic barriers to the implementation of profitable and successful conservation agriculture activities;
* Address the barriers limiting the adoption of conservation agriculture considering agroecology innovations in order to increase the sustainability of farming operations, and improve the conservation of soil and water in the region

Priorities
* Reducing and optimising the use of scarce natural resources (water, energy, nutrients) and potentially toxic substances (synthetic pesticides, mineral fertilizers, antibiotics) in agriculture;
* Redesigning cropping systems, more resilient to climate uncertainties;;
* Demonstrating increased rainfall water availability and water use efficiency for Mediterranean dry farming crops;
* Improving production of Mediterranean crops with efficient water management to make them more efficient and safer;
* Improving knowledge of soil erosion mechanisms to enhance fertility under conditions of water scarcity and to develop management recommendations for soil conservation;
* Improving knowledge of the technical, spatial and organizational dynamics of Mediterranean production systems to promote the adoption of innovations by farmers also by integrating farmers’ knowledge in the innovation process.

Among financed actions
* Socioeconomic analysis to identify the barriers preventing widespread application of conservation agriculture in the Mediterranean area;
* Research and innovation proposals fostering local stakeholders’ cooperation in the identification of technical, policy and socioeconomic barriers preventing the adoption of conservation agriculture;
* Actions addressing technical barriers through the development of site-specific solutions in demonstration sites located in different agrosystems;
* Identification and characterisation of adopters and/or local long-terms experiments of conservation agriculture, as well as the assessment of their systems in terms of resources conservation and profit;
* Capacity building activities addressed to farmers in the region to foster adoption of conservation agriculture;
* Actions aiming at developing societal, technological and policy innovations to facilitate the adoption of Conservation Agriculture in the region
