Priorities and funded actions:

Objectives
* To promote civil society-led activities to increase awareness of the criminal justice system in relation to the death penalty in Japan in line with regional and international trends and contribute to the process of bringing about a review of the capital punishment system in Japan;
* To raise awareness and knowledge amongst different stakeholder groups on issues surrounding the death penalty in Japan;
* To advocate and raise political support for abolition of the death penalty across parties and at national and sub-national levels;
* To build-up media reporting on the death penalty and foster the media’s increasing support of abolition

Priorities
* To raise awareness and understanding of the death penalty in Japan targeting different social groups;
* To advocate to foster greater public support for abolition of the death penalty in Japan

Among financed actions
* Information and awareness-raising campaigns:
– Formulate and update information about the death penalty in Japan, as well as international and regional trends and the criminal justice system and communicate this information using diverse communication channels including traditional and social media;
– Conduct relevant studies on topics such as reintegration/rehabilitation of offenders, alternative sentencing (life imprisonment), or similar;
– Organise debates online and provide analysis on evolution of debates;
– Engage national and local media to enhance their understanding and increase reporting of the ethical and legal issues around the death penalty
*  Advocacy:
– Engage Members of the Diet local authorities and other relevant decision-makers including to encourage elected representatives to provide leadership and take the initiative in creating public debate on the death penalty;
– Organise seminars, workshops, meetings, other activities in partnership with key organisations such as the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA);
– Map out and engage local authorities and advocate the passing of resolutions banning the death penalty
* : Capacity-building: 
– Strengthen civil society capacity to raise awareness, exchange information and network;
– Create strong links with media and help contribute to critical reporting towards the death penalty, encourage mature debate as well as to highlight Japan’s important role in setting trends in Asia for example in the context of broader democratic practices, respect for the rule of law and the promotion of human rights

– Be established in a Member State of the European Union or Japan
