This edition of CORDIS Express talks about the research that explores and contributes to the protection of our oceans and to develop their potential as food, fuel and medicinal resource.
Oceans cover 71 % of the planet’s surface, and these salty seas are an abundant, and mainly unexplored, source of food, energy and medicine. The ocean has many secrets that are yet to be unravelled – more than 90 % of the marine biodiversity has not been explored. This means that there is a huge potential for the discovery of new species and applications in the field of marine biotechnologies.
Our oceans can remain an ongoing source of necessities and source of yet-unknown applications for years to come if we can succeed in sustainably managing our marine ecosystems. Two Horizon 2020 sections are dedicated to protecting our marine resources and developing their vast potential: Aquatic Resources and Food Security, Sustainable Agriculture and Forestry, Marine, Maritime and Inland Water Research and the Bioeconomy.
The aims include optimising the sustainable contribution of fisheries and aquaculture to food security, boosting marine biotechnologies to fuel ‘blue’ growth and fostering cross-cutting marine and maritime research to harness the potential of Europe’s oceans, seas and coasts.
