On this World Day against Trafficking in Human Beings (July 30), the European Union reaffirms its commitment to combat this phenomenon and to fight for the rights of victims.
Over the past years, the European Union has developed a legal and strategic framework to combat trafficking in human beings. This framework covers all areas of EU action, including funding and research on the prevention and fight against this crime as well as the protection of victims.
Moreover, the Spotlight Initiative, launched with a budget of €500 million from the EU, in partnership with the UN, aims to eliminate all forms of violence, including trafficking in women and girls, a particularly vulnerable target group.
Despite the efforts, trafficking in human beings remains a particularly lucrative form of serious and organised crime in Europe.
