For the 2028 edition, France and the Czech Republic must each choose a city to become European Capital of Culture following an application and selection process. Since December 2021, any French city can apply for the label of “European Capital of Culture 2028”. They have one year to prepare their application and a strong cultural programme that will last for the year during which the award is given. The winner receives a prize worth €1.5 million.
Candidate cities can promote their cultural dynamism and heritage through the organisation of exhibitions, other events such as conferences or concerts. The programme proposed by each applicant city must have a strong European dimension, which must be reflected in the themes selected and the participation of artists and cultural operators from different countries. Applicants must also demonstrate the long-term impact of their application.
The benefits for the cities are great from the point of view of international influence, the enhancement of the city’s image in the eyes of its citizens and the strengthening of the capacities of the cultural and tourism sector.
In France, many cities have already applied, such as Saint-Denis, Bourges, Nice, Reims, Amiens, Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand, etc., each highlighting their own social and territorial characteristics. Saint-Denis highlights the youth and diversity of its territory, while Bourges focuses on the fight against climate change in culture.
