EU-Tunisia relationship: Continue and strengthen the Preferred Partnership

On 17th May, the EU-Tunisia Association Council was held to review the state of bilateral relations and discuss the objectives of their future relationship.

The Association Council work will focus on the main themes of the EU-Tunisia partnership, in particular support for socio-economic development and trade relations, the continuation of the democratic transition and decentralisation process, the Tunisia-EU youth partnership and mobility and migration.

In the report on EU-Tunisia relations, the European Commission reaffirmed the strong link between these two partners. It reaffirms the EU’s commitment to Tunisia’s development and demonstrates that the European financial commitment of €305 million (through the European Neighbourhood Instrument) in 2018 will continue in the coming years.

The EU remains Tunisia’s largest trading partner, accounting for about three-quarters of its exports and more than half of its imports in 2018. The EU remains the largest foreign investor in Tunisia, accounting for more than 85% of all foreign direct investment in the country, and with more than 3,000 European companies employing more than 300,000 people.
