European Parliament calls for an increase in the EU budget

The European Parliament has announced that it has interrupted negotiations with the Member States on the EU’s next multiannual budget for the period 2021-2027, at the risk of delaying the €750 billion recovery plan backed by it.

The additional nine billion promised by the German Presidency is insufficient.

EU heads of state and government agreed last July on a budget of €1 074bn over seven years. But the European Parliament is calling for a much higher volume, especially for 15 EU flagship programmes. But a decision on this would only be taken in a few years’ time.
