European Parliament votes on three urgent measures to support the EU

The measures adopted by the European Parliament, on a proposal from the Commission, remain to be approved by the Council. They provide for the extension of the use of the European solidarity fund to cases of health crises, the temporary suspension of EU rules on airport slots and the mobilisation of 37 billion euro from the European structural funds.

The emergency measures to help people and businesses cope with the crisis were adopted in plenary session less than two weeks after the Commission presented its proposals. The measures aim to mobilise 37 billion euro from available EU funds as soon as possible for the regions and countries most affected by the coronavirus pandemic; to release up to €800 million for European countries in 2020; and to prevent air carriers from operating empty flights during the pandemic.
