Thanks to the European Union’s humanitarian airlift and the German government’s 10 million euro package of measures to provide immediate assistance to the African Union (AU) in the context of the current coronavirus pandemic, 500,000 coronavirus test kits were delivered on 31 August 2020 to the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
In total, nearly 1.4 million tests will be made available to African Union countries for the extraction and detection of the virus. In June, Team Europe provided €10 million to facilitate the implementation of the Africa Joint Continental Strategy for the coronavirus outbreak, supporting in-country health care workers, rapid responders for surveillance, laboratory and case management and the strengthening of the Africa Continental Taskforce for Coronavirus.
