New reform priorities for countries wishing to join the European Union

Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, said: “The citizens of the Western Balkans are part of Europe and belong to the European Union. Today’s reports on the “enlargement” package are a rigorous assessment that sets out the way forward, highlighting the results achieved and the areas where considerable efforts still need to be made.”

The Commission today adopted its communication on the EU enlargement policy and the 2020 enlargement package. The annual reports, which assess the implementation of fundamental reforms in the Western Balkans and Turkey, are presented in conjunction with clearer and more precise recommendations and guidelines on next steps for partners, in line with the enhanced enlargement methodology.
