Within the framework of the PASOC program (9th EDF), the European Union (EU) announced 6 million euro in order to enhance the democratic role of the Civil Society in Guinea.
The funding is expected to benefit Civil Society Organisations; enabling them to play a more active role in public life and reinforce their position and networks. The four year programme (PASOC) will help to increase their ability to participate in local development and politics by, for instance, providing support such as training and sharing expertise. Civil society groups in Guinea played a crucial role in addressing human rights issues during the social conflicts and violent events of 2007-2009, as well as in the subsequent transition process and the organisation of Presidential elections in 2010. Since cooperation with Guinea is suspended following the adoption of appropriate measures under Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, current EU interventions are reserved for accompanying the democratic transition as well as directly supporting the population. The other 10th EDF projects concerning the governance sector and transport – five projects in total for an amount of 139.9 M€ – will be available for Guinea when free and transparent legislative elections have taken place.
