Following Hurricane Irma, which hit Saint Barthelemyand Saint Martin, the European Union mobilized its emergency response instruments to assist affected or threatened countries.
As a first step, the European satellite mapping system Copernicus has been activated at the request of France. The Copernicus satellites provided maps to Guadeloupe, Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin. This satellite system had also enabled the EU to transmit satellite images to the US authorities following Hurricane Harvey.
The Commission’s 24/7 Crisis Response Coordination Center has contacted the countries participating in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and is able to provide assistance required by the affected countries.
In addition, the EU Solidarity Fund could be mobilized to support the reconstruction efforts on the ground.
