Thanks to the European Union and its Research and Innovation policy, new standards have been developed to help a better and earlier detection of Alzheimer’s disease. The Horizon 2020 programme is the EU’s programme that gives grants for projects in the Research and Innovation fields.

These newly developed standards will serve to calibrate diagnostic tools for more accurate diagnosis and may facilitate the development of new drugs to fight the disease that, together with other forms of dementia, is estimated to cost 167.5 billion euro per year in the EU.

Dementia is affecting large numbers of people and is a major burden for society. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia affecting 50 – 70% of all patients.
