Hat: Next European Research Council Grants under the Horizon 2020 Programme
Funding Scheme: 2013-04-24
The negotiations about the EU budget for 2014-2020 may not yet be achieved and still ongoing in the European Parliament and the Council, the European Research Council has already revealed the provisional schedule of its annual work programme and calls for proposals.
Grants according by the ERC, under the 2007-2013 Programme for research and innovation FP7, are now including in the next 2014-2020 Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for research and innovation. ERC grants support individual researchers of any nationality and age who wish to pursue their frontier research. The ERC encourages in particular proposals that cross disciplinary boundaries, pioneering ideas that address new and emerging fields and applications that introduce unconventional, innovative approaches.
In the scheduled to come, no major changes are to be noticed in the structure of the calls that should remain the same. However it has to be noticed that there will be no Synergie calls for 2013 and 2014.
ERC Grants are subdivided into 3 Grants:
– Starting grants: it aims to support up-and-coming research leaders who are about to establish a proper research team and to start conducting independent research in Europe. The scheme targets promising researchers who have the proven potential of becoming independent research leaders. It will support the creation of excellent new research teams. The opening and submission deadline for Starting grants should be on first and second quarter of 2014.
– Consolidators Grants: are designed to support researchers at the stage at which they are consolidating their own independent research team or programme. The scheme will strengthen independent and excellent new individual research teams that have been recently created. The opening and submission deadline for Consolidator grants should be on second quarter of 2014.
– Advanced Grants: allow exceptional established research leaders of any nationality and any age to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains. The ERC Advanced Grant funding targets researchers who have already established themselves as independent research leaders in their own right. Calls should be launched on fourth quarter of 2014
– The Proof of Concept Grants are open to researchers who have already been awarded an ERC grant. ERC grant holders can apply for this additional funding to establish the innovation potential of ideas arising from their ERC-funded frontier research projects. They will continue in the future programme.
It is important to note that this schedule is indicative as the 2014-2020 Budget has not yet been voted.
