Paris is the new 2017 European Capital of Innovation (iCapital). The European Commission awarded Paris this 1 000 000 euro prize. The award, granted under the EU’s research and innovation programme Horizon 2020, recognises Paris for its inclusive innovation strategy. Tel Aviv and Tallinn were selected for the second and third places and were both awarded 100 000 euro.
Over the last decade, Paris has built more than 100 000 square meters of incubators, and hosts now the world’s largest start-up campus (the Reinventing Paris project is a good example). In addition, the city spends 5% of its budget on projects proposed and implemented by citizens. Thanks to this strategy, citizens and innovators from the private, non-profit and academic sectors have made Paris become a true FabCity.
